“A Journey to Mexico”, an inspiring Mexican movie club

“A Journey to Mexico”, an inspiring Mexican movie club at YCC – Zouk Mikaël

In collaboration with the Mexican Embassy in Lebanon and under the patronage of the Mexican Ambassador HE Mr. Jorge Alvarez, the Youth and Culture Center hosted a movie club on Friday February 17 at 8pm. Attended the event HE Mr. Lex Bartlem, Ambassador of Australia, Dr. Maroun Masaad, member of the municipal council of Zouk Mikaël, Dr. Jackie Maalouf, president of Dialeb, Mr. Roberto Khatlab, director of the Center of Latin American Studies and Cultures (CECAL) at USEK, Ms. Wafa Abed, president of the Institute of Progressive Women (IPW), Ms. Nada Hamzeh, board member of MEPI-LAA, Ms. Claudia Maroun, cultural attaché at the Mexican embassy and a number of moviegoers.

The Good Herbs (Las Buenas Hierbas) is Maria Navaro’s (the infamous Mexican director) latest productions, released in 2010. Las Buenas Hierbas is a story about brain chemistry, the chemistry of plants and human emotions. It’s about the Mexican herbalist heritage and the Aztec ancestral knowledge that keeps the record of the plants and herbal remedies that cure the human soul. Powerful and dramatic, there is no deus ex machina. Commanding a mood both modern and slightly magical realist, Novaro guides us towards an inevitable ending, both sad, and poetically perfect. Las Buenas Hierbas triggered a spirited discussion led by Eliane Fersan, YCC’s director and Ambassador Alvarez about the woman with the cure for all her friends but could not cure herself. HE Alvarez introduced the audience about ancient Mexican practices and reverence to the power of nature as well as the invaluable Aztec legacy.

If music is worth a thousand words, a movie is worth a thousand journeys, especially when followed by a nice discussion. YCC thanks all those who attended and promise you more journeys and adventures around the world.
